Welcome to The Monk Club

Richmond UK's first and best alternative music club

The Monk Club is southwest London's venue of choice for alternative and experimental music, featuring young new bands as well as seasoned professional musicians, poets and performers.

Founder Simon Klein is an artist and college lecturer by day and a serious rock and roller otherwise. At The Monk Club he brings together art school veterans and new school idealists, mingling in the club's booze-free church basement surroundings.

Recent bands and musicians have included Patrick Wood and Tim Whitehead, Will Jackson, Catherine Whyte, Pixiephone, Danielle Jackson, and of course the Simon Klein Band.

Rock journalist Mark Paytress reckons that Richmond has rediscovered its creative roots: “I love the fact that, within earshot of the rock nobility at the top of Richmond Hill, the great unwashed are seizing that tradition and doing something new and interesting with it.”

The Monk Club has aroused the interest of the music press, attracted by the diverse range of music on offer and by the venue itself, which looks more like a 1972 sixth form clubroom than a music haunt. “That’s part of its charm,” says Simon Klein.
